Chances are, if you are shopping for a new LED sign, safety is a top concern—as it should be! It’s a priority of ours as well, which is why each and every AdCenter is UL and cUL certified. What is UL Certification?

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is a nonprofit safety organization founded shortly after electricity was showcased at the 1893 Chicago World Fair to provide safety testing and approval for electronics. Today, UL is recognized as the most reputable electronics safety certification organization in the world.

How Does UL Testing Ensure Safety?

Products that are UL certified have gone through intensive testing and approval processes prior to leaving the manufacturer’s facility. The safety organization has strict requirements for the following:

  • Standards: UL requires tests for safety and quality prior to granting certification. Any UL certified product undergoes comprehensive procedures and follows stringent guidelines. Cheap parts and sloppy workmanship is unacceptable by UL standards.
  • Verification: A local UL field representative visits a manufacturer several times a year to examine finished products and confirm everything is up to code, thus ensuring that the Listing Mark is applied only to products built in accordance with UL requirements.

Dangers of Non-UL Certified LED Signs

Beware manufacturers that downplay the importance of UL certification, as well as those who imply that their products are certified when they are not. Look for the official UL logo and ask for a UL Listing Number. The research is worth the time, especially when it ensures the safety of your employees and customers!

Without an independent verification of safety, you simply have to rely on the manufacturer’s word that their products are sound. It’s simply not worth the risk when it involves the safety of others and the security of your organization.

Additionally, you might run into issues just getting your EMC installed if it’s not a UL-certified LED sign—and do you really want to spend all that money on a product you can’t even use?!

A previous client of ours who owns a barbecue restaurant in the Southeast came to us after purchasing a non-UL certified EMC from a misleading manufacturer. Unfortunately, the site landlord wouldn’t allow the sign to be installed without safety certification from the UL, leaving them with a sign they could not use.

Another customer of ours, a school in the Midwest, went to install their non-UL certified LED sign, but the town informed them that it didn’t comply with safety regulations. Again, they were stuck with an unusable sign.

Buying a non-UL approved sign can put your company at risk when it comes to insurance, too. A car wash on the West Coast bought an uncertified EMC from a low-quality distributor. They had the sign installed, but were then told by their insurance company that it violates their policy and coverage.
